Gay Iconography

Rufus Wainwright has created a list of his top ten gay icons. He discusses each one, but to save you a click, they are:

1. Judy Garland
2. Stevie Nicks
3. Dusty Springfield
4. Madonna
5. Kylie Minogue
6. Morrissey
7. Barbra Streisand
8. Pink
9. Prince
10. Kate Bush

And here's my list:

1. James Dean
2. Rufus Wainwright
3. Madonna
4. Frank O'Hara
5. Greg Louganis
6. Gwyneth Paltrow
7. Todd Haynes
8. Chris Isaak
9. Sarah Michelle Gellar
10. The cast of Ugly Betty

  1. Gwyneth Paltrow???

    How'd she make that list?

I haven't seen Ugly Betty yet, but am starting to get curious about this show- the buzz it's been getting- so I'll have to DVR it soon!

  2. Yay! Stevie Nicks and Kate Bush. They should duet.

  3. Hah! Stevie Nicks was one of my major, major celebrity crushes in high school -- actually she was the first one where I consciously took notice and said to myself, uh, I'm having this reaction? and she's a she?

It's a little embarrassing to have been so crushed-out on someone so femme-y, but there ya go. ;)

  4. Ooh, and apparently Stevie Nicks and Chris Isaak will be touring together in the spring. That should be a queer mecca all the way around. *grin*

  5. Wow, I've met and shaken hands with two of your icons. And I've shaken hands with people who slept with Frank O'Hara, but then I grew up in New York.

  6. I've met two of my icons too: Rufus and Chris.

  7. I love that Rufus calls Kylie the gay shorthand for joy...chuckle...and Pink is a gate-way drug...lol...

  8. What? How can you leave out Margaret Cho? http://www.margaretcho.com/

  9. Why I am not on your list, Charlie?
