America as a culture seems to support poetry that reaffirms what we already believe is true rather than poetry that surprises us with what is actually true.

  1. Does it even support the former? Perhaps tolerate, if we're speaking of America with a capital A.

  2. Or, Charles, is it that old poets celebrate with the culture the old truths they scavaged through old turmoil, turmoil like yours presently from which you now master and express truths they missed, ones you will celebrate all so soon yourselves – much to the consternation and possible amusement of the new poets after you. Godspeed.

  3. i think this is a problem with more than just poetry. it's a problem with american culture in general. People only want to experience things that reinforce their own already existing notions of how things work, rather than anything that makes them question those notions.
